Eagle River Falls

Andrew, Kit, Andi and I went for a short hike to see the south fork of Eagle River falls (Arlie was at a friend's house for the weekend). The temperatures had been above freezing for a few weeks prior and we thought that with the runoff the falls would probably be pretty spectacular. We weren't wrong.

It was a nice little hike, if a little vaguely marked. We lucked into picking the right fork in the road each time so that was nice. My favorite part of the falls was that little snow window at the far right where you can see water falling past. The falls are about 60 ft high - I think it's kind of hard to get perspective sometimes in photographs.

Ice Sculptures

There's an ice sculpture contest every year in downtown Anchorage that usually lasts until mid-February. Unfortunately, the warm spell we had meant we had to book it to the location the first week the sculptures were created or we would miss out. I'm so glad we did!

Alaska Zoo

The short days and a long winter break were starting to drive us all a little crazy so I took the girls to the Alaska Zoo. It's a zoo that features mostly Alaskan native animals that are injured or otherwise unable to live in the wild. I felt a lot better gawking at the animals here than in most zoos because of it! It was a relatively "warm" 15 degrees so once we were bundled up it wasn't too bad.
