Eagle and Symphony Lakes

We'd been wanting to hike to Symphony and Eagle lakes all summer but didn't end up doing it. We figured this weekend's weather was supposed to be unusually mild so we would give it a go.

We started off when the sun came peeking over the mountains. It was close to 40 degrees so we all ended up stripping off layers.

It was a long, long, long hike. 12 miles. There was very little to look at, no surprises along the way. It was more like a slog than a hike.

The end was kind of pretty.

Sort of.

ETA: OK, here's a better picture of the end of our hike from my phone. And it is pretty. So maybe I was just grumpy.

And I just looked at other people's photos of the lakes and if you hike up even further (UGH) you can see both lakes at the same time. Despite their close proximity they're two different colors because they get their water from different sources. You totally can't tell that in my pictures.

The kids were fantastic. It was definitely the longest and probably the most boring hike we've ever forced them on. They were such good sports and there was no complaining. Arlie and Andi were even pretty excited to find a few late-season crowberries hanging around. After a few deep freezes, the berries were extra tongue-stainy much to the girls' delight.

Here we are hiking back. We didn't get back to the car until well after dark. It was quite the adventure!
